Silence the Stress!

"Getting Fit. . . One Step at a Time"

Prolonged stress hormone elevation can result in headaches, insomnia, digestive problems, depression and elevated blood sugar.

Blueberry Benefits by Dr. Oz

Okay, it's no news flash that blueberries are nutritious. They've been high on our suggested shopping list for years now, and they're easy to love. Lately, they've been getting more good press than a presidential contender (not hard!). If you were choosing just one fruit to eat every day, a big handful of blueberries -- fresh or frozen -- would be hard to beat. Why?

They make high blood pressure take a nosedive. Eating blueberries daily for just 8 weeks can drop your blood pressure by 4% to 6%. That's a lot. Even more impressive, it works on obese adults with metabolic syndrome, a scary group of risk factors that invites heart disease and diabetes. The "dose": about 2 cups of fresh or frozen blueberries. Just put a bunch on your cereal and use the rest in this Spinach Salad with Steak and Blueberries recipe. (By the way, blueberries aren't the only blood-pressure-friendly fruit. Cranberries, strawberries, and raspberries help, too.)

They could cut your LDL cholesterol almost in half. Blueberry researchers -- yep, there are people who do nothing else -- believe the berries activate certain genes in your liver cells that help flush out lousy cholesterol by 44%. This happens in just 3 weeks in the lab. Pretty impressive, though more study is needed. (Meanwhile, there's also evidence that eating blueberries every day helps keep your colon healthy and shields your brain against Alzheimer's and premature aging. (Here are even more ways.) What are you waiting for? Get your berries on!

Over half of Americans prefer organic foods. Some choose organic to support local farms and others say they want to avoid toxins in conventioally grown products.

Here's a quick and healthy breakfast:

DR. ELLOUISE’S SUPER DUPER START TO THE DAY

1 oz. Ageless Xtra from Univera (for vital energy, mental clarity and focus, managing stress, and joint comfort and flexibility)
1 oz. ProArgi9 from Synergy(helps the heart be healthier and the veins more elastic (and much more)
1 bottle of Ageless Essentials (perfectly balanced nutrition)
1 oz. Aloe Gold (promotes a healthy digestive system and skin)
Enough water to make 3 cups
1 Tablespoon Core Greens from Synergy (the equivalent of 5 plates of spinach & sea greens)
1 RegeniCare package from Univera (promotes joint comfort and flexibility)
2 scoops of non-GMO, organic soy from Wholenectar.com (soy fights cancer)
1/4 cup Flax Seeds (fights cancer, lowers cholesterol, good for regularity)
1/4 cup frozen blueberries (feeds the pancreas)
1/4 cup frozen cranberries (feeds the bladder and liver)
1/4 cup frozen Fiesta blend (papayas, strawberries, pineapple) or whatever blend you like!
1 fresh or frozen peeled Banana (for potassium and tryptophan-which the body makes into seratonin). I have a high need for potassium so I actually use 3 bananas a day.

Using the VitaMix blender is very helpful, cheaper blenders will burn out sooner. Also, flax seeds will not be finely ground up with a regular blender. Flax seed oil can be used but then it’s not “freshly ground” which has more nutrients. Put liquids in the blender first, then add the frozen fruits, blend and enjoy!

Ageless Xtra, Aloe Gold, Essentials, and RegeniCare are all Univera Life Sciences products and are available from Dr. Ellouise 253 241-5151. ProArgi9 and Core Greens are from Synergy and also available from Dr. Ellouise at www.synergyteamglobal.com/drellouise

God Provides! My Food Bank Chili Recipe

All week long, I've been craving chili but, I didn't have the ingredients. One of the ingredients that makes it taste so good is bell peppers but I rarely get that at the Food Bank. Yesterday, when I went to the food bank, they had onions, bell peppers and tomatoes! Wow! God really provides.....not just what we need but, also, what we want! Here's my chili recipe:

1 large package Adzuki, small red or kidney beans (Adzuki beans have the highest protein ratio)

2 large cans of diced tomatoes or Fire Roasted tomatoes (dice them)

2 large bell peppers (diced)

1 large onion (diced very fine)

2 Tbs chili powder (add more or less according to your taste)

I soak the beans overnight to remove some of the bean sugars. In the morning, dump the beans into a collander and then rinse. Put back into the pot and put enough distilled water to cover them plus about 2" more. Bring to a boil. Turn down the heat and boil for one hour. Repeat this process 2 more times (this removes most of the bean sugars so it lessens the "bean" effect).

Meanwhile, put the tomatoes, bell peppers, onions and chili powder into a large crockpot and turn on high (or, if you don't have a crockpot, just put them into another pot and bring to a boil then reduce the heat to medium).

When the beans have been cooked the three times, combine the beans with the tomato mixture. If using the crockpot, cook on high for at least 5 hours. If using the stovetop method, cook on low for at least an hour.

Taste to be sure the flavors have blended before serving. If not, just cook a little longer.

What Your Walking Speed Says ABout Your Expiration Date!

Stephanie Studenski, MD, in a study at the Univeristy of Pittsburge says that her study on ambulation amoung the elderly showed tha the faster someone 65 years or older covered a short distance, the longer s/he could expect to live. "The difference wa so dramatic," said columnist Derrick Z. Jackson in the Boston Glove, "that the change of livning another 10 years for 75 year old men, depending on their gait speed, ranged from a ow on in five chance to a nearly guaranteed nin in ten. For 75 year old women, chances ranged from one in three to nin in ten"
But, you can't cheat by consciously trying to walk faster because speed is just a marker.
Tips: take smaller, faster steps, not longer ones. Swing your arms faster (but don't go crazy-keep them close to your side), and breathe naturally. Whether you choose to chew cum at the sam time is up to you!

Bill Clinton ---a Vegan!

Ending a few months of speculation and uncertainty, former president Bill Clinton announced that he’s a vegan on CNN. This is a story of transformation and turnaround if there ever was one. When he first began his presidency, Bill was known for his love of beef steaks, chicken enchiladas, and the somewhat less presidential McDonald’s hamburger. Word is he wasn’t picky and would go after most meat items often with a certain amount of enthusiasm. In short, he loved meat. The problem is these foods didn’t love him back.

In 2004, less than four years after leaving office, the 58-year-old Clinton felt what he described as a tightness in his chest as he returned home from New Orleans, where he was promoting his memoir, “My Life.” Days later, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery to restore blood flow to his heart. “I was lucky I did not die of a heart attack” Clinton said.

Alzheimer's Prevention?

Ken Babal, C.N.
Alzheimer's is a condition in whic brain cells degenerate and die. Lion's Mane is one of the edible mushrooms widely eaten in japan and China. Japanesse studies show that Lion's Mane is able to regenerate neurons by stimulating production of Nerve Growth Factor.
NGF belongs to a family of proteins that play a part in maintenance, survival and regeneration of neurons during adult life. In mice, its absence leads to a condition resembling Alzheimer's.
A class of compounds called hericenones in Lion's Mane has been shown to stimulate production of NGF, casuing neurons to regrow. These compounds offer great potentail for repairing neurological damage, improving intelligence and reflexes and, even more significant, preventing and treating AD.
Also, a fat soluble fraction isolated from Lion's Mane, called amyloban, was found to protect against neuronal cell death caused by toxic beta amyloid peptide. Beta amyloid peptide is the main component of plaque that develops in the brain of AD patients, causing destruction of neurons as it progresses.

Long but Worth it! Mitochondria Info

Mitochondria, the cellular power plants that generate virtually all the energy your body requires, play a vital role in keeping organs youthful and healthy, too.

So what can you do to keep those mitochondria powered up? Try reaching for the green -- like green pepper, green kiwifruit, and green parsley. Green-pigmented foods like these are rich in pyrroloquinoline quinone -- or PQQ for short -- a powerful antioxidant that shields mitochondria from oxidative damage in such vital organs as the brain and heart.

More PQQs, Please
Over time, damage to the delicate DNA inside mitochondria can accelerate aging and lead directly to degenerative disease. Dietary PQQ may not only shield these precious mitochondria from damage but also promote the formation of new mitochondria. Studies also suggest that PQQ may protect against neurological damage caused by the common environmental toxin methylmercury, which has been linked to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

A sore hip makes everything more difficult -- from sleeping to walking up stairs. But you could keep those hips of yours feeling fine if you're a lover of garlic and onions.

About 15 percent of older adults regularly deal with hip pain. But in a recent study of women, those who tended to eat lots of produce -- particularly herbs from the allium family, such as onions and garlic -- showed fewer signs of hip osteoarthritis in x-ray tests.

Arthritis-Fighting Allium
The study analyzed the diets of a large group of middle-aged adult twins, most of whom did not have symptoms of arthritis when the study started. Eating lots of allium herbs correlated with less arthritis in the hip. And in a separate lab analysis, researchers also found that diallyl disulphide -- a substance found in the allium family -- appeared to help inhibit enzymes that can cause damage to joint-protective cartilage.

How About Preventing Cancer Instead of Trying to Cure It?

Diet: Fruits, Vegetables And Cancer.
A panel review concluded the evidence that fruit and vegetable consumption lowers risk for certain cancers was probable. The evidence was not strong enough to receive a grade of convincing, which is the best grade possible. It was agreed that weight management and physical activity has emerged as very important factors in cancer prevention, and that alcohol consumption significantly raises the risk. Diet is only one aspect of living for lower cancer risk. Scientists estimate if healthy diets are combined with regular physical activity and weight management, about 1/3 of the most common cancers could be prevented - that's almost 350,000 cases in the US every year.

Soft Drinks May Lead to Gout - Fructose is the Culprit!

The incidence of gout appears to be increasing among women (gout has traditionally affected more men than women). New data points to fructose in sweetened beverages as a potential culprit. Gout isn't just painful--it can cripple joints and may b an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Gout develops as a result of uric acid in the blood tha precipitates into crystals that lodge in joints, causing pain. In men, gout has been linked to the consumption of fructose--a sugar used to sweeten sodas, juices and many other foods. Fructose, it appears, triggers production of uric acid in the body. Based on data from the large Nurses' Health Study, researcher have now extended the warning about fructose to women. they say that even one sweetened soda or juice a drink a day increase a woman's risk of developing gout.
