Snack Attack During the Holidays?

Has the end-of-year parade of goodies started at your home or office? Make them easier to resist by cooking with this flavorful herb: saffron.

In a recent study, a compound in saffron appeared to help overweight women snack about 50 percent less. What better time than now to start nixing the munchies?

Snack Attack
In the study, some of the overweight women got their saffron from capsules. The others took placebos. And after 8 weeks, the women in the saffron group were snacking half as much as they did at the start of the study. They also felt less hungry before meals. Some even lost a couple of pounds.

Soothing Saffron

What's the secret behind saffron's snack-snuffing powers? Researchers suspect that compounds in the herb may alter levels of stress-boosting brain chemicals and help decrease anxiety and depression. And that's good news for your waistline because anxiety, stress, and depression are all common triggers for unhealthy eating. Stress triggers cravings for not-so-good-for-you foods, like treats that are high in fat and sugar. And many people calm anxiety or assuage depression with munching, too -- seeking that temporary sense of "Ahhhhh."

The Wonders of Sweet Potatoes!

What has more fiber than a bowl of oatmeal, more vitamin A than a cup carrots, and more potassium than a banana? A sweet potato! A sweet potato is the healthiest holiday food. It's rich in Vitamin C, it's loaded with carotenoids which are powerful antioxidants tht protect against cancer and heart disease and boost immune function. Its high potassium content helps control blood pressure. At 150 calories, itis naturlly low calorie, says nutritionist Joy Bauer, author of Slim and Scrumptious. But, don't drown it in butter and sugar which negats its natural goodness! (from AARP-Your Health).

Here's my simple recipe:
Sweet potatoes, cut like french fries
Rosemary
Olive Oil
Sea Salt

Put the sweet potatoes into a large bowl (however many you want, according to how many will be eating them). Drizzle olive oil over them. Add rosemary and salt. Bake at 450 until the potatoes carmelize. YUM! This is one dish I make every Thanksgiving because all my guests love it so much. Down with "candied yams", up with yummy Rosemary Sweet Potatoes!

Seven Ways to Turn Bad Eating Habits Around

from Taste of Health-January 2010)
1. Recognize: Name and admit your habit so you can change it
2. Reassess: Set new goals for yourself, focusing on what you want, not the opposite.
3. Refuse: “A clean break is more effective than a gradual one,” says nutritionist Amy Lanou, PhD, who adds that three to four weeks ought to do it.
4. Replace: “Swap the bad habit for something pleasurable, such as a handful of raspberries or a walk,” she continues.
5. Reinforce: Hang notes to remind yourself of your goal and seek support.
6. Record: Monitor your progress so you can improve it.
7. Reward: Praise yourself for mini-successes and when you reach your goal.

Our #1 Health Problem (from Taste of Health January 2010)

At the rate Americans are packing on the pounds, more than half of the population of certain states could be obsess (30 pounds or more above recommended weight) within a decade. And 43 percent of American adults are at risk for obesity no matter where they live.

“Obesity is going to be a leading driver in rising healthcare costs,” Kenneth Thorpe, PhD, professor and chair of the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, recently told ABC News. Obesity leads to serious health problems, including cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. It’s expected to cost the U.S. about $344 billion in medical-related expenses by 2018.

“The accumulation of excess body fat and not simply excess weight,” obesity is best treated with a “plant-based diet and the seamless integration of increased physical activity and social support to alter modern diets and lifestyles”, says David Heber, MD, PhD, FACP, FACN, professor and founding director at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. He specifically blames our tendency to consume “highly palatable foods with hidden fats and sugars,” rather than “fruits and vegetables with anti-inflammatory phytochemicals.”

While recognizing that certain individuals are more susceptible than others, Harvard University researchers recommend prioritizing lifestyle interventions. This country’s skyrocketing medical costs won’t decline until Americans make serious efforts to slim down by improving their diet and exercise patterns,” adds health economist Eric Finklelstein.

It's not as easy as some might think but stopping smoking is so incredibly important for your health and the health of those around you! Find whatever works for you and JUST DO IT! Or, more accurately, stop doing it.

For some, the patches work. For others, behavior modification. For still others, prayer works. Don't quibble about the method.....just find something.

I am so passionate about this because my dad's stroke and consequent death 3 weeks later were directly attributed to his smoking.

Told Ya So! Long, But Informative Article from Today's Seattle Times

Ramen Noodles May Lead to Chronic Illness
By Althea Chang
Ramen noodles could be putting college students and frugal eaters at greater risk of developing chronic illness, according to a recent study.

The instant noodles have long been a staple for the cash-strapped, but they could be putting their fans at risk of further nutritional deficits already caused by a lack of affordable and fresh fruits and vegetables, suggests a study presented at a meeting of the Dietitians Association of Australia.

According to the study, conducted by Australian researchers Danielle Gallegos and Kai Wen Ong, one in four college students reported insecurity about being able to afford food.

Of those students, two-thirds said they ate two or less servings of fruit per week, suggesting that money spent on more-filling but sodium- and MSG-laden Ramen noodles and fast food takes away from funds that could be spent on healthy but less-filling fruits and vegetables.

Those who relied on instant noodles and other cheap food with little nutritional content were at greater risk of chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes and heart disease, the researchers found.

While the study was based in Australia, results seem to reflect conditions among college kids and low-income individuals across America as well.

With new efforts initiated by the White House and supported by First Lady Michelle Obama, however, affordable healthy foods are expected to become more available in low-income areas across the U.S., as MainStreet previously reported.

Found the Low Down on Spinach!

By RealAge

When you buy spinach at the grocery store, should you grab the bagged spinach way deep in the dark shelf or opt for the clear plastic tub basking in fluorescent light?

Research suggests that the tub might be where it's at. In a recent study, spinach stored in clear plastic tubs under fluorescent lighting actually became more nutrient-rich in a short span of time.

Well-Lit Wonders
In the study, researchers refrigerated spinach under two conditions -- in total darkness and under fluorescent lighting. After 3 days, levels of lutein, zeaxanthin, folate, and vitamins C, E, and K had increased in the light-exposed leaves. But nutrient levels in the greens that got no light tended to stay the same or decrease.

Eat It The Way God Made It and You'll Be Healthier!

PeaceLove sez, "Shocking Mother Jones article about a Cornucopia Institute report on how many of the most popular veggie burgers are made with hexane, a neurotoxic byproduct of gas refining."

In order to meet the demands of health-conscious consumers, manufacturers of soy-based fake meat like to make their products have as little fat as possible. The cheapest way to do this is by submerging soybeans in a bath of hexane to separate the oil from the protein. Says Cornucopia Institute senior researcher Charlotte Vallaeys, "If a non-organic product contains a soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, or texturized vegetable protein, you can be pretty sure it was made using soy beans that were made with hexane."

If you've heard about hexane before, it was likely in the context of gasoline--the air pollutant is also a byproduct of gas refining. But in 2007, grain processors were responsible for two-thirds of our national hexane emissions. Hexane is hazardous in the factory, too: Workers who have been exposed to it have developed both skin and nervous system disorders. Troubling, then, that the FDA does not monitor or regulate hexane residue in foods. More worrisome still: According to the report, "Nearly every major ingredient in conventional soy-based infant formula is hexane extracted."
Here's some of the soy brands that contain neurotoxins: "Boca Burger (conventional), Franklin Farms, Garden Burger, It's All Good Lightlife, Morningstar Farms, President's Choice, Taste Above, Trader Joe's, Yves Veggie Cuisine."

And here's some that are free from hexane: "Boca Burgers (Made with organic soy), Helen's Kitchen, Morningstar (Made with organic), Superburgers by Turtle Island, Tofurky, Wildwood."

This is one way in which the "organic" label is more than just a greenwash! On the other hand, anything labelled as "made with organic ingredients" instead of "organic" can have hexane or plutonium or whatever.

Anger and Your Heart

There have been a number of studies over the years describing the relationship between emotions and physical illness. Simply put, it is impossible to separate our emotional and physical selves; this relationship is the so-called "mind-body connection."
Therefore it is not surprising that one of our more powerful emotions, anger, has been associated with physical disease. For the most part, it has come to be understood that both stifled anger and high levels of anger are risk factors for coronary heart disease, or heart attack.
In a study published earlier this year in the American Heart Journal, authors Davidson and Mostofsky looked not only at anger, but at various types of anger. Specifically, they found that different kinds of anger impart different levels of CHD risk. In other words, it's not so much that one is angry, it's how that anger is expressed that seems to matter.

Lower Your Blood Pressure the Natural Way!

Your blood pressure could be lower just by indulging more in this sweet tropical treat: bananas.

Cheap and plentiful year-round, bananas are bursting with potassium. And a review of several major studies suggests that people who add the potassium equivalent of an extra 1 1/2 to 2 bananas to their day could drop their blood pressure 2 to 3 points.

More Points for Potassium
Dropping BP by 2 or 3 points is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, it's enough to lower stroke risk. In other research, people with the highest potassium intake levels cut their stroke risk by a whopping 38 percent compared with the people who got the least potassium. This magical mineral works by encouraging your kidneys to filter more pressure-boosting sodium out of your bloodstream. It also helps tiny blood vessels relax and makes pressure sensors in artery walls function more efficiently. (Here's another sweet treat that snares high blood pressure.)

Mass A-Peel
Aim for 3,000 milligrams a day of potassium to get optimal RealAge benefits. But don't rely on pills; they can be dangerous if you have kidney problems. Go with fruits and veggies instead -- not just bananas but prunes, watermelon, baked potatoes with the skin, mushrooms, tomatoes, and other produce, too. Produce will also give you a head start on these important blood pressure control strategies:

Slash the sodium. Fresh produce is naturally low in salt. And licking the salt habit can lower your blood pressure even if it's just a bit high. Here are three ways to slash more salt.
Mine more minerals. Fruits and veggies pack not just potassium but calcium and magnesium as well, two additional pressure-pampering minerals. Get tips on sneaking more veggies into your meals with this video.
Seek a sleeker you. Low-cal fruits and veggies can help you hit a healthy weight, which is important for your blood pressure. Get your waist back in 2 weeks with this YOU Docs plan.
